Costume Review, Remix and Rendering #10: TEMPLE GRANDIN (2010)

Prior to taking a dive into the work of Cindy Evans, I had only heard of the movie Temple Grandin.  I didn’t have any particular desire to watch it, and didn’t even know what it was about really. But after watching it and then falling into a rabbit hole of research about the amazing woman that this story focuses on, I was kind of obsessed.

REVIEW

As biopics go, this film is one of my favorites.  I applaud the attempt (one I believe is successful) at taking us inside Temple’s mind and helping us to understand how she interprets the world around her.

Side note: I recommend reading her book Thinking in Pictures: My Life with Autism.

I was particularly moved by the portrayal of Temple’s mother, who, in a time when institutionalization was recommended, in a time when institutionalization may have been easier, decided to lead with love.  She believed that her daughter could find success and happiness out in the world with the love and support of her family, therapists, and teachers.

Instead of trying to force the atypical to fit into the world of typical, this brilliant scientist has pushed to make the typical world a more welcoming and adaptive place for the atypical. Thank you, ma’am!

REMIX

I really love when people fully commit to a look or a particular type of garment and make it their uniform.  Temple’s attachment to western shirts with a curved yoke just really sends me to a happy place.

I initially was going to remake myself a western shirt like one of hers.  But then I thought, what better tribute to someone who lives life on their own terms, than to make a garment that fits into my own personal uniform of rockabilly dresses.

So I combined two patterns, did a lot of grading and came up with a tea length, yoked bodice dress with an old west prairie collar and piping for days. This was also my first time working with piping and now I’m hooked.  I legit want to add piping to EVERYTHING.
