The Road to a #MeMade Wardrobe: Simplicity S9759

Somewhere around 2016 or 2017 Aaron and I took a road trip to Rosarito, an area in Baja Mexico, with some friends.  While there, we were approached by various vendors on the beach to purchase things like ponchos and blankets.  I, while under the influence, took little convincing to purchase a poncho. (Please note, I still have that poncho and I always get compliments on it.) Anyway, Aaron isn’t easily swayed.  So we came back across the border without having purchased a Baja jacket for him.  But since then he’s been kinda obsessed with them.

A few years ago I found him a Baja jacket style shirt from Lucky Brand.

He loved it and wears it often.  But I knew that he still secretly yearned for something a little more stylized.  So when I found a Simplicity Pattern for this type of top, I knew it was only a matter of time before he’d end up with a closet full of his favorite style of hoodie.

Pattern: Simplicity 9759 Children's, Teens' and Adults' Hoodie

Fabric: Vintage Stripped fabric from Costume Rentals Corporation and Multicolor Reversible Jacquard Fabric from Joann

Style: Hoodie

Vintage/Contemporary:  Contemporary

Pattern Edits:

1.     I shortened the sleeves on one of the hoodies because I didn’t have enough fabric.

2.     Also because of how much fabric I had, I had to add a seam to the back panel instead of cutting it on the fold.

Lessons Learned:

1.     The hood of the shirt comes with a lining that is smaller than the outer layer.  This is done to give the hood some volume.  But my hubby has a big head. So I think next time I’ll just make the linking the same size as the outer so that the hood will actually fit like it’s supposed to.

2.     Matching up patterns is till tricky, but you can do some fun stuff with cutting on the perpendicular to create something interesting.

As I was watching this come together, I would take breaks to come out of my lair and tell Aaron that I was making something fire for him.  After trying them on he was so pleased with the final product.
